Fordite is a rare, finite material formed from layers of hardened, hand-sprayed car paint from the pre-automation era, making it a collectible artifact of industrial history with no new supply. The "gem-like" material, also known as Detroit agate, became impossible to create after the 1970s when factories switched to automated electrostatic painting, eliminating the overspray that formed the colorful layers.
